An RWJBarnabas Health facility since January 2022, formed in 2000 from the consolidation of Elizabeth General Medical Center and St. Elizabeth Hospital, and a state-designated Primary Stroke Center. It treats roughly 70,000 emergency patients a year, so for most of the city this is the hospital.
- Elmora Hills Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, 225 West Jersey Street. Skilled nursing and rehabilitation with long-term care, memory care, respite and palliative programs.
- Brother Bonaventure Care Center, 655 East Jersey Street. A 124-bed post-acute and long-term care center in the heart of the city.
- Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway, 865 Stone Street, and Overlook Medical Center at 99 Beauvoir Avenue in Summit, the county's state-designated Comprehensive Stroke Center. Both are common destinations when a case needs specialist care.

The Elizabeth River runs about 4.2 miles through the city before it reaches the Arthur Kill, and the city touches Newark to the north, Hillside and Union to the northwest, Roselle and Roselle Park to the west, and Linden to the southwest. - Union County Paratransit, 908-241-8300, provides curb-to-curb rides for residents aged 60 and over at three dollars a one-way trip, and runs veterans' transport to the VA in East Orange and Lyons. It is a good service that needs booking days ahead, which is precisely why it cannot cover a discharge that lands this afternoon.
