Bethlehem, PA Home Care on Both Sides of the Lehigh

The Lehigh River splits Bethlehem into two very different caregiving problems. The South Side's residential streets climb the approaches of South Mountain behind Lehigh University: masonry and brick homes built close together for steel families, short lots, steep front steps, and bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs. The North Side rises from the Monocacy Creek valley, where the Moravians laid out the 1741 settlement now inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, into the flatter, more walkable blocks of west and northeast Bethlehem, where brick ranches put everything on one floor. Keep going and you reach Bethlehem Township, with larger lots, split-levels and colonials, and a car required for everything.

Crossing between the halves is its own consideration. The Hill to Hill Bridge, open since 1924, carries Route 378 from Wyandotte Street on the South Side to the ramps on the North Side, with the Fahy and Minsi Trail bridges taking the rest. It is a short drive on a clear Tuesday and something else entirely in ice or during a downtown closure — which is why we try to match caregivers to the side of the river they already live on. On the South Side hills in particular, mobility care starts at the front steps, not at the front door.

Every August since 1984, Musikfest has taken over both halves of Bethlehem for ten days — the historic Moravian district on the North Side and the SteelStacks campus on the South Side, sixteen stages, fifteen of them free, and more than a million visitors. In December the Christmas City fills up again for Christkindlmarkt. For families with a parent in the middle of it, those weeks mean closed streets, no parking within blocks of the house, and a lot of noise for someone with dementia who does better on a predictable schedule. We plan around them rather than pretending they are not happening.

The rest of the year, the anchors are quieter and closer: the Rooney and Basilio Huertas senior centers on East Fourth Street on the South Side, Old York Road Senior Center up on the North Side, and the Fountain Hill Senior Center on Seneca Street.
