Live-in & Hourly Home Care Always Available in Ocean County

Almost everyone who searches for home health care in Ocean County, NJ is asking one of two different questions, and the answer changes which phone number you need.

If a doctor has ordered skilled nursing visits, wound care or in-home physical therapy, that is Medicare-certified home health, usually arranged by the hospital's discharge planner and delivered in short visits a few times a week. What that does not cover is the other twenty-three hours: the bathing, the transfers, the meals, the medication reminders, the overnight supervision, the person who notices your father has stopped eating. That is non-medical home care, and it is what we do. We wrote the distinction out properly in home health care vs home care, because families lose weeks to the confusion.

Ocean County is long. Care in Barnegat Light has nothing in common with care in New Egypt except the county line, and a caregiver's commute is a real constraint rather than a detail, so it is worth being specific about where we work.

Southern Ocean County: Forked River, Lanoka Harbor, Waretown, Barnegat, Stafford Township, West Creek and Tuckerton, and out onto Long Beach Island at Barnegat Light and Harvey Cedars.

Which hospital your parent ends up in here is mostly a function of which Parkway exit they live near, and it shapes what the first week at home looks like.

• Community Medical Center, 99 Route 37 West, Toms River. A 617-bed RWJBarnabas Health teaching hospital, opened in 1961, and the largest and most active health care facility in Ocean County. Its emergency department is one of the largest providers of emergency care in New Jersey.
• Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus, 600 River Avenue, Lakewood. RWJBarnabas Health, on Route 9, and home to the James and Sharon Maida Geriatrics Institute. Longtime residents still call it Kimball.
• Ocean University Medical Center, 425 Jack Martin Boulevard, Brick. Hackensack Meridian Health, just off Route 88, serving northern Ocean and southern Monmouth counties.
• Southern Ocean Medical Center, 1140 Route 72 West, Manahawkin in Stafford Township. Hackensack Meridian Health, and the practical answer for everyone from Waretown south and out onto Long Beach Island.

Add the rehab layer and the picture gets denser: Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Toms River at 14 Hospital Drive runs three hours of therapy a day, five days a week, and Lakewood has a whole sub-acute corridor along River Avenue. All of it ends the same way, on a Tuesday, with a folder of instructions and nobody in the house.

This is not a marketing line. In Census QuickFacts, using American Community Survey 2020 to 2024 five-year estimates, 24 percent of Ocean County residents are 65 or over. The New Jersey Department of Health's SHAD data puts the statewide 65-plus share at 18 percent in 2024. The county's population estimate for July 2025 was 673,746, up from 637,229 at the 2020 census and 576,567 in 2010. The county's own Office of Senior Services says Ocean County is home to more than 200,000 adults aged 65 and over.

What that means in practice is queues. Rehab beds, adult day programs, aides, county services: demand here outruns supply in a way it does not in most of the state, and families discover it at the worst possible moment.

The county's front door for all of it is the Ocean County Office of Senior Services at 732-929-2091, on Hooper Avenue in Toms River. It is worth calling them even if you also call us; benefits screening and caregiver support are theirs, not ours.

Ocean County runs its own transit system, Ocean Ride, including thirteen fixed bus routes and the Reserve-A-Ride program: door-to-door non-emergency medical transportation for residents 60 and over and adults 18 and over with disabilities. You book by phone at 732-736-8989 between 8:15 a.m. and 4:15 p.m., up to four weeks ahead, at $6.00 round trip or $3.00 with a valid PAAD card. Every vehicle is wheelchair lift-equipped.

It is a genuinely good program, and there are two things in the fine print that families only find out the hard way. Drivers are not permitted to enter the home, so the rider has to be dressed and waiting at ground level. And the van can arrive anywhere inside a one to one-and-a-half hour window around the appointment.
