The Lehigh Valley runs about forty miles long and twenty wide, bounded by Blue Mountain to the north and South Mountain to the south, with the Lehigh River pulling everything toward the Delaware at Easton. Roughly 860,000 people live in the metro area, most of them along the Route 22 and Interstate 78 corridors. Practically, that means a caregiver's commute here is not a city commute: a family in Slatington or Mount Bethel is a very different scheduling problem than a family in Center City Allentown, and we staff accordingly.

Two health networks cover the region, and nearly every family who calls us has just left one of them. Lehigh Valley Health Network runs Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest in Allentown, the valley's Level I trauma center, along with LVH–17th Street, LVH–Muhlenberg in Bethlehem and LVH–Hecktown Oaks in Easton. St. Luke's University Health Network, headquartered in Bethlehem, runs its Level I Bethlehem Campus in Fountain Hill plus the Allentown, Sacred Heart, Anderson and Easton campuses. Between them sit the rehab and skilled nursing stops most recoveries pass through — Good Shepherd in Allentown and Center Valley, Cedarbrook in Allentown and Fountain Hill, Phoebe on West Turner Street. The handoff from any of those back to a quiet house is exactly what hospital to home care is designed for.

This is not an abstraction here. Northampton County has had more residents over 65 than under 18 every year since 2021 — roughly 68,500 seniors against about 60,000 children as of 2024, or 21 percent of the county. Lehigh County is close behind at about 19 percent, and is one of Pennsylvania's fastest-growing counties. Meanwhile the supports are thinning: Northampton County consolidated its senior center network after a cut of nearly $400,000 in state Area Agency on Aging funding, closing two locations, and LANTA raised fares and cut bus routes in 2026. When the bus stops running past the house and the nearest center closes, the help has to come to the door.

What that looks like depends entirely on the household. A few structured hours for bathing, dressing and meals is personal care. Nights are overnight care. When alone is no longer safe at any hour it becomes live-in care. Memory loss gets planned differently from the first visit through Alzheimer's and dementia care, and Parkinson's changes the shift again through Parkinson's care.
