The House Usually Decides the Care Plan Before We Do

Edison's dedicated senior center is at 2963 Woodbridge Avenue, open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a daily lunch program, chair yoga and line dancing. It also sits in the southeast corner of a very large township. For a parent living up in North Edison, that is a long drive through some of the worst traffic in the county, which is precisely why the township designated the Minnie B. Veal Community Center at 1070 Grove Avenue as a second senior center. Middlesex County adds RIDE, its reservation-based shared-ride service for adults 60 and over and for residents 18 and over with disabilities.
None of that covers the trip that matters most: the one where somebody has to remember what the cardiologist actually said. That is where a caregiver's day often begins and ends, getting your mother ready in time, into the car, into the office, and home again with the instructions still legible.
For the good days, the Middlesex Greenway is worth knowing about. It is a flat, ten-foot-wide paved rail-trail running three and a half miles from Metuchen through Edison to Woodbridge, with Edison entrances at Pierson Avenue and Jackson Avenue. It is one of the few places nearby where somebody using a walker can cover real distance without meeting a curb.

Is this the same as home health care?
No. We provide non-medical home care: personal care, meals, mobility support, companionship and supervision. If a physician has ordered skilled nursing or physical therapy at home, that comes from a home health agency, and our caregivers work alongside those visits rather than replacing them.
My father says he does not want a stranger in the house.
That is the most common objection we hear, and pushing through it rarely works.
