What Is Companion Care?

Companion care is non-medical help built around company: conversation, shared meals, games and hobbies, walks, errands, and rides to appointments and activities. It suits a senior who is safe at home but spends too many hours alone, anywhere in the 28 ZIP codes we serve, from Atlantic Beach and Fleming Island south through Ponte Vedra and St. Augustine to Palm Coast, Ormond Beach, and Pierson.

A companion also picks up the household tasks that start to slip, such as meal preparation, laundry, and light housekeeping. Companion care does not include hands-on help with bathing, dressing, or toileting; if your loved one needs that, personal care can be added to the same visits.

Errands are often the first thing to get hard. By the Census Bureau's 2020–2024 American Community Survey estimates, about one in six people 75 and older in the ZIP codes we serve have trouble running errands on their own, and in Palm Coast's 32164 and St. Augustine's 32084 it is nearly one in four. A companion who handles the errands, or goes along on them, keeps those trips in your loved one's week.

Why Companion Care Matters Here

Getting around without a car is hard in much of our area. In St. Johns County, where our office is, the Sunshine Bus runs its routes out of St. Augustine, north on US 1 only as far as Palencia, and none reach Ponte Vedra or Nocatee. The Council on Aging, which runs the bus, also offers door-to-door rides by reservation, and a companion covers the trips that do not fit a reservation, waiting through the appointment and bringing your loved one home.

There is also a good deal to get out to. In Ponte Vedra Beach, THE PLAYERS Community Senior Center at 175 Landrum Lane, run by the St. Johns County Council on Aging, is open Tuesday through Friday, with lunch, bingo, chair exercise, Tai Chi, dominoes, bridge, canasta, painting, and a putting green. The Council also holds free Memory Cafés each month at locations around St. Johns County.

Flagler County works differently. Its public transportation is a shared-ride, door-to-door service: riders must apply and be approved first, the county advises booking four to five days ahead, drivers wait three minutes for a rider to come out before leaving, and it offers no rides outside the county. A companion can have your loved one ready at the door, drive them to a specialist in St. Johns or Duval County, and on other weekdays take them to lunch at the Flagler County Senior Center in the Nexus Center on Commerce Parkway in Bunnell.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a companion take my parent to THE PLAYERS Community Senior Center?

Yes. A companion visit can be scheduled around the center's days on Landrum Lane, so the caregiver helps your loved one get ready, takes them there, and brings them home. The center also has its own transportation request form; call the center at (904) 209-3659 to ask about it.

Is there public transportation for seniors in Ponte Vedra and Nocatee?

Only in limited form. The Sunshine Bus, St. Johns County's public transit, runs its routes out of St. Augustine, and none reach Ponte Vedra or Nocatee. The St. Johns County Council on Aging, which runs the bus, also offers door-to-door paratransit by reservation, at a subsidized fare for riders who qualify and at private-pay rates for others; its reservation line is (904) 209-3710. Both serve St. Johns County; Flagler County's door-to-door service, described above, has its own rules. For trips that need flexibility, a companion can provide the ride and stay through the appointment.

What is the difference between companion care and personal care?

Companion care covers company, meals, errands, rides, and light housekeeping. Personal care adds hands-on help with bathing, dressing, and toileting, which Florida's rules keep separate from companion services. Many clients have both in the same visit. Call us at (904) 204-2046 and we will help you work out which your loved one needs.

Can companion care help someone with early memory loss?

It can. Regular conversation and a predictable routine can make the days easier. In St. Johns County, a companion can take your loved one to the Council on Aging's free monthly Memory Cafés or its Ponte Vedra Memory Care Center on A1A North. As memory loss progresses, families usually need more than companionship, and we will talk through what comes next with you.

What Families Are Saying

Testimonial: Dad used to spend the whole day in his chair. Now he plays cards, takes walks, and laughs again. The companion they matched him with gave us our father back.
