What Is Personal Care?

In Florida, personal care means hands-on help with the most private parts of the day: bathing and showering, dressing, grooming, toileting, and incontinence care. That sets it apart from companion and homemaker help, which under Florida's rules does not include hands-on care.

Our caregivers give this care in your loved one's own home, at the pace and in the order your loved one prefers, with privacy and respect, anywhere in the 28 ZIP codes we serve across St. Johns, Flagler, and Duval counties, from Fleming Island and the Jacksonville Beaches to St. Augustine and Palm Coast. It is non-medical care, and the registered nurse on our Ponte Vedra team is there when a question about a new medication or a change in condition needs a clinical eye.

Families often ask for personal care after a hospital stay, when a shower stops feeling safe, or when a spouse can no longer manage the lifting and the bathroom alone.

Why Personal Care Matters

When bathing and dressing become hard, people tend to put them off, and their health, comfort, and confidence suffer for it. The right help turns that around quickly.

It also gives the family back their own role. An adult child can visit as a son or daughter, and a spouse can be a spouse again, when a trained caregiver handles the bath and the bathroom.

If your loved one is seen at the Baptist AgeWell Center for Health in Nocatee, which offers geriatric assessment, medication management, and incontinence care, a personal care caregiver helps keep up at home the daily routines that care team recommends.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between personal care and companion care in Florida?

Personal care is hands-on: help with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and incontinence care. Companion and homemaker services cover company, meals, errands, and housekeeping, and under Florida's rules they do not include hands-on personal care. If your loved one needs both, a caregiver who gives personal care can handle the companion tasks in the same visit.

Does Medicare pay for personal care at home?

Not on its own. Medicare does not pay for help with bathing, dressing, or using the bathroom when that is the only care someone needs. It may pay for part-time home health aide visits alongside skilled nursing or therapy, through a Medicare-certified home health agency. We are a private-pay, non-medical agency: we accept private pay and long-term care insurance and do not bill Medicare or Medicaid.

Is there public help paying for personal care in St. Johns, Flagler, or Duval County?

For people who qualify, yes, though usually not right away. Florida's Medicaid Long-Term Care program covers help at home with bathing, dressing, eating, and hygiene for people eligible for Medicaid who need a nursing-home level of care, and the state's Community Care for the Elderly program can include personal care for people 60 and older who need help with daily tasks. Across our area, both start with a call to ElderSource, the area's Aging and Disability Resource Center, at (888) 242-4464. For Medicaid, that call is a phone screening that sets a priority rank on a waitlist. We are private pay and do not bill Medicaid, so our personal care can cover the time on a waitlist, or the hours a program does not.

Is it hard for a parent to accept help with bathing?

Often, at first. We start with the parts of the routine your loved one finds hardest, let them do everything they can for themselves, and keep them covered and in control of the pace. It usually gets easier once the same caregiver has come a few times and the routine feels familiar.

Can personal care start right after a hospital stay?

Yes, and the first days home are when help with showering, dressing, and getting to the bathroom matters most. Call us at (904) 204-2046 as soon as you know the discharge date, and bring the discharge instructions to the in-home assessment so our registered nurse can help with any questions they raise.
