Help at home, with you in charge of it

Home care for disabled adults is non-medical help at home for adults living with a physical disability, a brain or spinal cord injury, a progressive condition such as multiple sclerosis or ALS, or the lasting effects of a stroke. It covers the daily tasks a disability makes hard: getting out of bed and dressed, bathing, using the toilet, cooking, cleaning, shopping and getting where you need to go.

We care for adults of every age, and we plan the care around work, school, children and a household of your own. The person receiving care decides how their day runs, and the caregiver follows their lead.

Always Responsive Home Care is a private-pay, non-medical home care agency with offices in New Jersey, Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley and Florida. Our caregivers don't provide nursing, such as wound care or giving medications. When that's needed, it comes from a licensed nursing or home health agency, and we work alongside them.

What a caregiver helps with

  • Morning and evening routines

Getting up, washing, dressing and grooming in the morning; undressing, a wash and getting into bed at night, at the times you choose.

  • Transfers and getting around

Moving between bed, wheelchair, toilet, shower chair and car, using the equipment you already have. Tell us about lifts and other equipment when you call, so we can plan for them.

  • Bathing and the toilet

Help in the shower or bath, with toileting and with continence care, done privately and the way you prefer.

  • Meals and the kitchen

Shopping, cooking, cutting up food if that helps, and cleaning up afterwards.

  • Housework and laundry

Keeping the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom clean, changing the bed, doing the laundry.

  • Errands, appointments and getting out

Rides and company for appointments, shopping, work, classes, church or a night out.

  • Standing by

Someone nearby while you do as much as you can for yourself, ready to help with the parts you can't.

Care that keeps up with a changing condition

Some disabilities are stable for years. Others, such as MS, ALS and Parkinson's, change, sometimes quickly. We start with what's needed now and revisit the care plan when things change, adding hours, nights or help with transfers as needed, and taking them away again after a good stretch.

Related pages cover mobility care, Parkinson's care and stroke recovery in more detail.

Paying for care, and the public programs worth knowing

We're private pay: people pay us directly, long-term care insurance can reimburse them, and we don't bill Medicare or Medicaid. Public programs can pay for some help at home for people who qualify, and some families use a program for part of the week and private care for the rest. These are the main ones in the states we serve.

  • NJ FamilyCare MLTSS, New Jersey

Managed Long Term Services and Supports is New Jersey's Medicaid program for people who need a nursing-home level of care but want to stay at home. Personal care comes through the person's managed care plan.

  • Supports Program and Community Care Program, New Jersey

Run by the Division of Developmental Disabilities for adults 21 and older with an intellectual or developmental disability. Services can be self-directed, so the person chooses who helps them.

  • Personal Assistance Services Program (PASP), New Jersey

Run by the Division of Disability Services through county offices, for adults aged 18 to 70 with a permanent physical disability who work, go to school, train for a job or volunteer. It pays for up to 40 hours a week of routine personal care. Eligibility isn't based on income, but there is a cost share based on income.

  • Community HealthChoices, Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania's Medicaid managed care program covers personal assistance at home for adults 21 and older with a physical disability who need a nursing-facility level of care.

  • Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care, Florida

For adults 18 and older who qualify for Medicaid because of a disability and need a nursing-facility level of care. Enrollment starts with a screening by the local Aging and Disability Resource Center, and there is a waitlist.

Your local Center for Independent Living can tell you which of these you might qualify for. Our payment options page explains how private pay and insurance work with us.

What families are saying

I would definitely recommend Always Responsive Home Care, Union County NJ!!!! My dad was in a very bad state, both physically and mentally, after my mom passed away. Dad was in the hospital for weeks and then at the rehab center for more weeks. We hired Always Responsive Home Care to send a caregiver to stay with dad every day at the rehab center as a companion and care giver while my sister and I were at work. The owners Frank and Gianni were wonderful. They arranged care for my dad within a day and even came to visit dad themselves several times, bringing him treats and keeping dad company. The caregiver Enoch was so great with dad. He chatted with him throughout the day, helped him in and out of bed and the bathroom, helped him with his meals, and made sure that my dad had anything he needed. We really appreciate everything that Always Responsive Home Care did for Dad. You will not go wrong hiring this team for your loved one.

What services do your caregivers provide?

Our caregivers help with everything your loved one needs to live safely and comfortably at home. This includes personal care such as bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and help moving around the house safely. They also assist with everyday tasks like meal preparation, light housekeeping, laundry, grocery shopping, errands, and rides to appointments. Just as important, they provide friendly companionship, conversation, and medication reminders to help your loved one stay on track. Whether you need companion care, personal care, respite care for a family caregiver, or overnight and 24 hour care, we'll build a care plan around your loved one's routine.

Can a caregiver help with bathing, dressing, and using the bathroom?

Yes. Our caregivers are trained to help with personal care, including bathing, showering, dressing, grooming, and toileting. They always treat your loved one with patience, dignity, and respect, and follow their preferences and routines so they feel comfortable and in control. Personal care is one of the most common reasons families reach out to us, and it can make a big difference in keeping your loved one safe at home.

Do your caregivers drive clients to appointments and errands?

Yes. Our caregivers can drive your loved one to doctor's appointments, the pharmacy, the grocery store, the salon, church, or a visit with friends. They stay with your loved one the whole time, so they're never left waiting alone or struggling to get in and out of the car. If the caregiver uses their own vehicle, mileage is billed at the standard federal (IRS) mileage rate. Caregivers can also drive your loved one's car, and we simply make sure every vehicle used is properly insured.

Do you provide overnight or 24 hour care?

Yes, we provide both. Overnight care gives your loved one an awake caregiver through the night to help with bathroom trips, prevent falls, and offer reassurance if they wake up confused or anxious. It also lets the rest of the family finally get a good night's sleep. For loved ones who need support around the clock, our 24 hour care is provided in shifts, so there's always a caregiver who is alert, rested, and ready to help.

Do you care for people with Alzheimer's or dementia?

Yes, dementia care is one of our specialties. Every caregiver receives Alzheimer's and dementia training when they join us, along with ongoing training throughout the year. They know how to gently guide your loved one through daily routines, ease confusion and anxiety, and keep them safe at home, all with patience and compassion. We also take the time to learn your loved one's history, interests, and favorite things so we can create moments of comfort and connection every day.

Can a caregiver give medications?

Our caregivers can't administer medications, but they can provide medication reminders to help your loved one take the right medicine at the right time. Every situation is different, so our team will talk with you about safe options for managing your loved one's medications and help you find the approach that works best for your family.
