Fifty-Five Square Miles, One Township

Hillsborough is the largest municipality in Somerset County by area: 55 square miles holding 43,276 people at the 2020 census, up 13 percent in a decade. That single fact explains most of what makes home care in Hillsborough different from home care in a compact borough.

A caregiver working the neighborhoods off Route 206 and Raider Boulevard is in a dense suburban township. Twenty minutes later, out past Duke Farms and its 2,700 acres, or up toward the Sourland Mountain Preserve, 6,358 forested acres of diabase ridge that the county park commission holds inside Hillsborough's own borders, the same caregiver is on rural roads with no streetlights. Amwell Road, South Branch Road and the Route 206 bypass are the arteries that hold it together, and they are where the traffic sits at the wrong hours.

What that means for your family is that scheduling has to be realistic. We would rather build a plan around shifts we can genuinely staff at your end of the township than sell you a calendar we cannot fill. Coverage runs from a few hours a week through hourly care and overnight care to full live-in care.

The Amwell Road Rehab Corridor, and What Comes After It

Most Hillsborough hospital stays end at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset in Somerville, ten minutes up Route 206. It is a 355-bed regional medical center with centers of excellence in cardiovascular care, cancer, stroke and joint replacement, it holds the state's primary stroke center designation for Somerset County, and it has been recognized with Magnet status for nursing excellence four consecutive times. Its outpatient offices at 331 Route 206 North and 1 Jill Court keep a lot of follow-up care inside Hillsborough.

From there, recovery usually detours through Amwell Road. Bridgeway Care and Rehabilitation Center at 395 Amwell Road is licensed for 129 long-term care beds and runs physical, occupational and speech therapy on site seven days a week, with dedicated hip, knee, stroke, cardiac, neurology and pulmonary programs. Avalon Assisted Living sits on the same campus at 393 Amwell Road. Across the township, All American Assisted Living at 351 Route 206 holds 112 assisted living beds plus memory care, and Brookdale Hillsborough is on Auten Road.

The hard part is not any of those places. It is the week after: therapy has stopped, the equipment has been delivered, and the first morning at home nobody is there to help with the transfer out of bed. That is exactly what hospital-to-home care and mobility care exist to cover, and we can usually start the same day.

Services offered in Hillsborough, NJ

Live-In Care

Live-In Care

Live-in care provides seniors with the consistency of having the same dedicated caregiver daily, allowing them to build trust and familiarity in their care routine. This arrangement enables seniors who need assistance with most activities of daily living to remain comfortably at home, maintaining their independence while receiving comprehensive support from their live-in caregiver.

Hourly care provides flexible, scheduled support for seniors in their homes. Caregivers visit for set periods, offering assistance with daily tasks, personal care, and companionship tailored to the client's specific needs and preferences. This service can range from short shifts a few days a week to full 24/7 around-the-clock care, accommodating a wide spectrum of care requirements and ensuring seniors receive the right level of support.

Overnight Care

Overnight Care

Overnight care offers peace of mind with an awake caregiver present during nighttime hours. This service ensures assistance is available for nighttime needs, emergencies, or early morning routines, allowing clients needs to be met overnight, enabling family members or daytime caregivers to have uninterrupted sleep.

Always On Virtual Care

Always On Virtual Care

Always On Virtual Care pairs our caregivers with Sensi, an AI-powered audio sensor that detects falls, distress, early UTI signs, and other care events around the clock. Sensi alerts our team the moment something changes — so families gain a second set of eyes during the hours a caregiver isn't physically in the room, and seniors stay safer at home for longer.

Two Senior Centers on the Same Road

Hillsborough is unusual in having two senior programs a few hundred feet apart on South Branch Road, and families regularly confuse them.

At 339 South Branch Road is the Somerset County Senior Wellness Center at Hillsborough, one of the county's network of centers, open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a reserved county lunch. At 379 South Branch Road is the township's own Municipal Senior Activity Center, a 3,000-square-foot facility run by Hillsborough's Social Services Department, which also operates a senior bus for township residents aged 60 and over, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and fills the calendar with chair yoga, bingo, mah jongg and shopping trips.

Both are genuinely good, and both stop at 4 p.m. Neither one gets someone showered in the morning, back from the bathroom at 2 a.m., or fed on a Sunday. Home care is the part that runs on the other side of those hours, and the goal is usually to keep someone well enough to keep going to the center. That is what personal care and companion care are for.

Getting Started, and Paying For It

Always Responsive Home Care is a private-pay, non-medical agency founded by Teresa Sajkowski, a geriatric registered nurse with more than twenty years in hospital, hospice and home care. She oversees the care plans, which is why the first conversation is about your parent's actual day rather than a package of hours.

It starts with a call to (609) 208-1111. We come to the house in Hillsborough, look at the stairs, the bathroom and the routine, and tell you plainly what level of support the situation calls for. Then we match a caregiver on temperament and need, not on whoever is free, and we arrange backup coverage ourselves if that caregiver cannot make a shift. There are no deposits, no long-term contracts and no cancellation penalties, and billing comes after care is delivered.

We accept private pay, EFT and credit card, and all long-term care insurance policies, handling the claim submission and reimbursement paperwork for you; the details are on our payment options page. When memory is the reason you are calling, start with Alzheimer's and dementia care; when a family caregiver is running out of road, start with respite care. Hillsborough is one of the towns in our Somerset and Hunterdon County territory, and every ZIP code we cover is listed on our service areas page.
