ZIP 32136, Where Nearly Four in Ten Residents Are 65 or Older

ZIP 32136 is the Postal Service’s Flagler Beach, and it reaches past the city limits. The Census Bureau’s version of the ZIP code takes in the City of Flagler Beach, the separate Town of Beverly Beach to the north, the unincorporated shore around Painters Hill beyond that, and a corner of the City of Palm Coast. On the island, A1A is Oceanshore Boulevard, and Moody Boulevard, State Road 100, crosses the Intracoastal Waterway to the mainland, where the hospitals and the county’s senior programs are. Our office is at Nocatee Town Center in St. Johns County, open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the phone at (904) 204-2046 is answered around the clock. For the team, the services and how we work, start with Always Responsive Home Care of Ponte Vedra.

By the Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 American Community Survey estimates, 32136 is older than the county around it. Its median age is 60.1, against 53.1 for Flagler County. About 39% of its roughly 8,400 residents are 65 or older, against 31% countywide, 55% of households include someone that age, and about 850 people 65 and older live alone. The houses are older too: the median home in 32136 was built in 1989, against 2002 for the county, about one in nine is a mobile home, three times the county’s share, and about one in six is kept for seasonal or occasional use, so the house next door may stand empty for part of the year. For a parent living alone on a quiet street, overnight care puts someone awake in the house on the nights that worry you most, such as the first ones after a fall or a hospital stay. Hourly care covers the meals, laundry, errands and housekeeping of a normal week, a few hours at a time, and when bathing and dressing become the hard part, personal care takes them on.

AdventHealth Palm Coast, Nine Minutes Over the Bridge

For most of 32136, the nearest hospital is AdventHealth Palm Coast, at 60 Memorial Medical Parkway off Moody Boulevard. In free-flowing traffic it is about 9 minutes’ drive from the pier, west over the Moody Boulevard bridge, and about 13 minutes from Beverly Beach. It keeps a 24-hour emergency department and is certified by the Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center. AdventHealth’s second Flagler County hospital, AdventHealth Palm Coast Parkway at 1 AdventHealth Way, opened in August 2023 with 100 inpatient beds. It is about 17 minutes from the pier, and from Painters Hill the two hospitals are about equally close, roughly 15 minutes each. Both are in Palm Coast; for families there, see home care in Palm Coast.

Discharge can come with a few hours’ notice, and someone has to be at the house when your parent gets there. Our hospital-to-home care starts that day: prescriptions picked up on the way back over the bridge, meals that follow the discharge instructions, help in and out of the shower, and a ride to the first follow-up visit. Mobility care means a steady arm from the car to the door and through the house in the weeks of recovery, and if the doctor orders home health nursing or therapy, our caregivers cover the hours between those visits. We are a non-medical, private-pay agency: we accept long-term care insurance, ask for no deposit or long-term contract, and don’t bill Medicare or Medicaid. Care starts with a free in-home assessment and a written plan, our caregivers are screened, background-checked, trained and insured, and there is a registered nurse on our staff.

Always On Virtual Care pairs our caregivers with Sensi, an AI-powered audio sensor that detects falls, distress, early UTI signs, and other care events around the clock. A1A, the Pier and a Decade of Storms

In October 2016, Hurricane Matthew’s surge undermined about 1.3 miles of A1A in Flagler Beach, and parts of the road collapsed. In 2019 the Florida Department of Transportation buried a concrete secant wall under the dune from North 18th Street to Osprey Drive. Hurricane Ian, in September 2022, brought a storm tide the U.S. Geological Survey measured at 8.3 feet in Flagler Beach. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection found that the dunes rebuilt after Matthew and Irma were largely gone, that the new wall was exposed along much of its length, and that the seaward 165 feet of the pier had been lost and the rest left unsafe. The road behind the wall held; beyond its ends, A1A was badly damaged. Hurricane Nicole followed six weeks later, and the state’s post-storm report counted about 395 feet of damaged road south of the pier and 7,500 feet of major damage to the boulder revetment between 7th and 23rd Streets South. Since then, FDOT has built a second buried wall, from South Central Avenue to the south end of Flagler County, a $21.4 million job begun in spring 2024.

None of that replaces a plan for the next storm. Since 2023, Flagler County’s map has shown a Potential Hurricane Evacuation Zone along the coast in place of the old lettered zones, and when an order comes, the county publishes the neighborhoods that have to leave. Ahead of Hurricane Milton in October 2024, the order took in the whole barrier island from Marineland to Flagler Beach, along with mainland neighborhoods including those off John Anderson Highway, and the county announced a special needs and general-population shelter at Rymfire Elementary in Palm Coast. Anyone who relies on oxygen or electrically powered medical equipment, or needs help with basic everyday tasks, can register for the county’s special needs shelter program, with questions answered at 386-313-4200. The county calls that shelter a back-up to a personal plan and asks caregivers to come along, because its staff cannot give one-on-one care. With live-in care, someone is already in the house when a watch is posted, packing medications, chargers and paperwork and getting your parent over the bridge early rather than at the last minute. For families who live out of town, extra hourly care before and after a storm means someone checks the food, the medications and your parent in person.

Senior Programs and Rides on the Mainland

The Flagler County Senior Center is on the mainland, at 2199 Commerce Parkway in Bunnell, about 13 minutes’ drive from the pier. It is open weekdays, with a hot lunch for people 60 and older who enroll and reserve ahead, bingo, line dancing and arts and crafts. County Senior Services also delivers Meals on Wheels after a home assessment: frozen meals each week for residents over 60. For rides, Flagler County Public Transportation runs a shared, door-to-door bus. Riders apply and are approved before their first trip, book at 386-313-4100, ideally four to five days ahead, and pay $2 each way. The driver waits three minutes, then leaves, and the county does not offer rides out of the county. For more on the county seat, see home care in Bunnell.

For a parent with memory loss, the day goes better with a steady routine. Alzheimer’s and dementia care at home keeps that routine going, and companion care covers the company, the drives to the senior center and doctors’ offices, and the waiting at the door for a bus that will not wait long. ElderSource, the Area Agency on Aging for Northeast Florida, handles the screening for subsidized in-home programs and Medicaid’s long-term care program through its HelpLine at 1-888-242-4464.
